GLOSSARY - B
BAT (Best available technology)
Advanced technology, industrially available and applicable in technically valid conditions, able to guarantee high level protection of the environment as a whole.
Benchmarking
Method of technical-economic assessment of performance and processes based on comparative analysis of the performance and processes of different realities.
Bioflushing
Combined technique for in-situ treatment of polluted permeable soil that exploits the metabolism of the micro organisms, associated with the action of a biosurfactant.
Bioinventing
In-situ bioremediation technique in which oxygen is delivered, via extraction wells, to contaminated unsaturated soils by forced air movement (either extraction or injection of air) to provide bacterial flora with the oxygen required to stimulate aerobic biodegradation of the pollutants present in the subsoil.
Biomass
The biodegradable fraction of products, waste and residues from agriculture, forestry and related industries, as well as the biodegradable fraction of industrial and municipal waste. In the energy field, biomass indicates the quantity of organic material that can be used to produce energy through combustion or fermentation. Biomasses useful for the production of energy include wood, effluents and animal faeces, agricultural, forestry and paper residues.
Bioremediation
Environmental recovery or reinstatement of contaminated soil using biological methods
Biosparging
Technique for in-situ treatment of unsaturated contaminated soils consisting in injecting nutrients and air in order to promote biodegradation of the microbial flora present.
