GLOSSARY - E
Efficiency
Constant performance capacity during functioning of an entity (UNI 8290 Part 3). Typically, the relationship between results achieved and resources adopted to achieve these (UNI EN ISO 9000:2000)
Electric fields
An electric field is defined as a vector quantity that, at any point of a given region of space, represents the ratio of the force exerted on a test charge q to the magnitude of that electric charge. The SI (International System) unit of measurement of the electric field is volts/metre (V/m).
Electromagnetic fields
Field generated by passing of electric current in a conductor. Include: radio waves, micro waves, light etc.
EMAS
Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, Community environment management and audit scheme (set up by EC Regulation 761/2001).
Emission Trading
The Kyoto protocol establishes that , in complying with obligations, it is possible to transfer emission rights or to acquire the emission rights of another country. In other words, if a country succeeds in reducing emissions by more than the target assigned, it can sell the remaining part of its permitted emissions to another country that is unable to achieve its target. Vice versa, a country that spends more to reduce a quota of its emissions than to purchase the same quota from another country willing to transfer this, can purchase such extra right.
Emissions
All substances released into the atmosphere during functioning of a combustion plant.
Energy balance
Calculation of the total energy consumed by a system. Comprises both the energy necessary to produce the product and energy dispersed as heat.
