Remediation techniques

For the remediation of contaminated sites, through elimination or inertisation of substances present in the soil or in aquifers, EDF Fenice adopts specific technologies – usually divided into chemical, physical, thermal and biological – according to the characteristics of the site and type of pollution.

TYPE OF TECHNOLOGYDESIGNATIONAREAS OF APPLICATIONNOTES
Chemical-physical SOIL WASHING Soil contaminated by HYDROCARBONS, PESTICIDES and HEAVY METALS Ex Situ
Chemical-physical SOLVENT EXTRACTION Contamination by ORGANIC, ORGANOCHLORINE POLLUTANTS, HYDROCARBONS and PESTICIDES Ex Situ
Physical-chemical SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION  (SVE) Pollution with the presence of volatile polluting fractions, halogenated and non halogenated VOCs In Situ
Physical-chemical-biological AIR SPARGING Pollution in highly permeable, homogenous soil and non-bordering strata, contaminated by halogenated and non-halogenated VOCs and by hydrocarbons In Situ
Physical-biological-chemical DUAL PHASE EXTRACTION Pollution caused by halogenated and non-halogenated VOCs and by hydrocarbons present in clayey sand, silt or deep clays In Situ
Thermal THERMAL DESORPTION Pollution of soil contaminated by non-halogenated VOCs, polycyclic aromatic SVOCs, polychlorobiphenyls, pesticides and volatile metals Ex Situ
Physical SOLIDIFICATION/STABILISATION Non-organic pollution or on the results of soilwashing or bioremediation treatments Ex Situ
Thermal INCINERATION Suitable procedure for the disposal of chlorinated hydrocarbons, PCB and dioxins Off Site
Biological BIOINVENTING Non-saturated soils contaminated by hydrocarbons In Situ
Biological BIOSPARGING Non-saturated soils contaminated by hydrocarbons below the substrate level In Situ
Biological BIOSLURRY Pollution of sites by biodegradable contaminants Ex Situ
Biological LANDFARMING Pollution of sites by non-volatile biodegradable substances On Site
Biological BIOPILE Pollution of sites by non-volatile biodegradable substances Ex Situ
Biological MICROBIOLOGICAL BARRIERS Pollution of substrata by non-volatile biodegradable In Situ

Drawing on the resources of the Environmental Services Centre and its own facilities, EDF Fenice is able to coordinate and develop reclamation projects of large contaminated sites, adopting procedures with low environmental impact on soil, air, water in order to safeguard the population closest to the polluted areas.
